The James Black Gallery exhibits work in many mediums and forms. The space has a combination of elements that allow artists to be playful with the design and the usage of the space. We currently host indoor/outdoor workshops that are organized by community members, production rentals, and exhibitions.

a moment here is a chance to see a piece of the work we do, a glimpse into the studios, and a peek into our history with the house. this exhibition features artwork from the James Black Gallery’s studio members, staff, and board members!

 

The James Black Gallery is a queer-led arts and culture hub that presents exhibitions of early career artists, provides studio space to members of our collective, has a project space showcasing saleable art, and hosts interdisciplinary events. The JBG has been operating collectively for 10 years as of december, 2024!

 

come join us on thursday, february 27th from 4pm-7pm for our opening night! build some memories here, be part of our living archive, and celebrate our artists with us! we’ll be open from 3pm-7pm from february 28th - march 10th, 2025 for regular gallery hours.

The James Black Gallery is located on the stolen unceded and ancestral territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwu7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. These lands have been stewarded by them since time immemorial.

Please note that the James Black Gallery is not very accessible due to it being a house built in 1889. Detailed accessibility information can be found on the FAQ section of our website: www.thejamesblack.gallery/faq

In collaboration with: EXPOSURE UBC  

Nostalgia Night by EXPOSURE UBC x Hosting Home(s) residency at JBG invites you to reconnect with your inner child and the warm, comforting feeling of home. If our younger selves could build our homes, what would they dream for us?  

 

Join us for a laid-back evening of animations, snacks, art, and board games—a gathering that feels just like family.  
 

January 11 – Official Opening Event 

6:30PM - 10PM  

Step into an evening of warmth and connection at the opening of Hosting Home(s): Interwoven Worlds and Desires. Join us for an intimate gathering featuring small snacks, drinks, and artist talks as we explore the threads of home—woven through shared stories, hopes, and distant dreams. In a relaxed, drop-in setting, let the art and conversation ground you in new possibilities of belonging.  

January 14 – Talambuhay; গল্প Golpo:BIPOC Storytelling & Care Circle

6:30PM - 10PM  

Talambuhay—“to tell one’s story” and গল্প Golpo—“story, conversation”—an intergenerational dialogue circle on January 14th & connecting space for BIPOC community members, workers, creatives, students & beyond interested in anti-imperialist solidarities, organizing, research, art, and more!!  

 

We aim to collectively destress and discuss complexities, challenges, & lessons in navigating our respective practices & journeys as IBPOC folks across Global North + South solidarities with a focus on care, connection, and community-building   

 

- গল্প Golpo (Bangla word for “story; conversation”)  

- Talambuhay (Tagalog word for “to tell one’s story; biography; memoir”)  
 

January 17 – Closing Night

7PM - 10PM

Celebrate the conclusion of *Hosting Home(s)* with a closing discussion, poetry, and an open mic. Join the artists for a tender evening of sharing cultural food, words, and reflections. Bring your homes, your stories, and your hearts as we gather to honor the connections we’ve made and the futures we’ve envisioned together.

✨ a physically interactive sensory exhibition — free entry & free special events!

interplay is the third group exhibition by the Neurodivergent Artist Collective (NAC).

There are explicit invitations to physically engage with each piece of art, whether to contribute to the art by using the materials provided, or to experience a sensory delight (or displeasure) from all visitors. Each piece of art is an invitation for sensory engagement whether through proximity, touch or through contributing to the art by using the materials provided.

NAC Prixel Printmaking Workshop RSVP

PRIXEL is a modular printmaking system inspired by LEGO. Come join our free workshop led by Chantelle Chan (she/they) during the opening of our show! Supplies provided, no experience necessary.

NAC Sensory Stuffies: Sewing Light-Up Plush Toys Workshop RSVP

In this free workshop, participants will learn how to sew a soft LED circuit and incorporate it into a hand sewn plush toy to take home. No prior experience in sewing or electronics necessary; materials provided. All ages* and skill levels welcome!

*recommend 10+ or under 10 with parent participation

Neurodiverse Art Hangouts

Come join our free inclusive art spaces and experiences tailored for neurodivergent individuals! We will provide art supplies. You are also welcome to bring your own supplies and/or projects to work on. These hangouts are part of our interplay gallery show.
